Appendix IV: James Wood Brown, An Enquiry into the Life and Legend of Michael Scot

Compendium of Unnatural Black Magic,
Containing Citations and bonds of diverse spirits.[1]

Michael Scott, Prague in Bohemia, 12th February, 1261.
Regard, look into, reflect on deep things-
but beware above all of reading aloud.

1] Make a circle nine foot in breadth from goat’s skin, the front of which should be white and write on it with the blood of a dove [t]he names as follows to which may be added if wished the Hebrew names of God, Elohim, Adonai, Zebaoth, Agla, Jeharah and Others.

II] On a hazel stick cut and inscribe with dove’s blood the words and names of the figure on the previous page.

III] make a cap or crown shape of goat skin being white at the front and black at the back and write on it the following figure with dove’s blood

IV] Wear a black gown long enough to reach the feet on the upper half of which is a scapular or pentacle made from a goatskin on which is written in dove’s blood the names as follows

V] Make a little figure or sign of the spirit, the operator intends to summon written with the blood of a black crow on black goatskin which should be hung on a separate hazel stick been raised on the edge of a circle. The sign been

The circle, Wind, mat, robe and pentacle should be prepared at the new moon in the days of Mercury or Venus at the hours proper for these planets as found in astrological books.

VI] The number of participants in the operation must always be of an odd number, 1, 3, 5

VII] It is better and safer of the operations be in the open air, deserts, woods, or meadows been lonely empty and away from human notice. If their operation has to be in a house leave the door and windows open and place a couch to the East. Likewise allow no more people in the house than are appropriate to the procedure.

VIII] The experiment should take place in the days of Mercury or Venus in the first hour of the night or the sixth after sunset.

IX] Consider well before the ceremony exactly what is wanted in order that there is no hesitation by the master who been authoritative, determined, energetic, courageous, and clear of tongue and pronunciation should be the only one who speaks.

Make a fumigation of the following:

  • The seed of a black poppy
  • The Hemlock plant
  • Coriander
  • Parsley
  • Saffron

    And these should be in equal weight

    X] To control resistant spirits beat their figures or signs with the wand or finally draw the sign towards the fumigation coals threatening to burn it little by little

    XI] When entering the circle with his companions the master should say

    C] The third summoning of Almuchabzar:

    As soon as the spirits became visible in human form their identity as those summoned must be confirmed by making them take an oath as such whilest holding he rod which has to be stretched to them from the circle. Having then greeted the spirits the master should place the spirits in the following order in saying.

    D] allhancuh alenzod almuchabzar! hecon asip amillkamar alperiga algir filastaros aleclar  syroth algugarum berumistas legristus behamitar sula acharmonzacha camir ruppa sastarapa aronthas barachasti hemla omysyroth abdilbak amilekamar el leubel tharis algir alasaph mega star magin horet korapatta kyum o almichzazar.

    Then the spirits will ask the reason for their summoning and upon hearing and granting the request or promising to fulfil it should be dismissed as follows : [whilst placing the hand on the stick which can also be used with other spirits in petitions and transactions requiring some time to fulfil in which the master will be certain of his wish and free of care. Enough said for the wise man.] Farewell to ALMUCHALZAR.

    To give farewell to the spirits incant:

    When leaving the circle incant:
